Key information about euros
The Euro is commonly represented by its currency code (EUR) and in its symbol form (€). It was launched as an official currency on 1 January 1999, and coins and banknotes started to be released from 1 January 2002.
You'll need to have euros on hand if you're travelling to one of the many countries in Europe which use the euro as legal tender.
Which countries accept euros?
In total, 20 out of 27 EU member countries who have adopted the euro as their official currency, including Croatia, France, Greece, and Spain.
Euro denominations
The most commonly used notes in euros are the €5, €10, €20, €50, and €100 bills. There are also €200 and €500 notes but these are not as often because of their high value.

You can purchase your currency from us via credit or debit card. Regardless of how you buy your euros from us (online or in-store), rest assured, we won't impose any credit card handling fees. Please be mindful that your card provider might charge fees like cash advance fee, so it's advisable to confirm with them before purchasing your euros.

Can I use my bank card in Europe?
You have the flexibility to use your credit and debit cards across Europe, but be aware that your bank may impose a transaction fee for international card usage. These non-sterling charges can range depending on your provider.

Can I spend euros as cash when abroad?
Yes, cash is still frequently used in Europe. We would recommend a balance of cash for tips, taxis, and little treats, and the Travelex Money Card for peace of mind on larger purchases when travelling.

Can you use other currencies in Europe?
Not all countries in Europe use the Euro as their official currency, so it’s worth checking before you travel and ordering your currency ahead of your departure.
Some EU member states, such as Croatia, only recently adopted the Euro, whereas others, such as Hungary and Poland, have not yet adopted the Euro but will once they meet the EU’s necessary conditions.
